Server Backup & Restore

Backup to Cloud

  • Creates an encrypted daily backup (time configurable).
  • Only metadata of server is backed up, NOT your uploaded media or data files.
  • However, a frozen snapshot of your files (media/data) from the backup will remain in the server storage path to enable you to restore to your last backup.
  • Therefore, if you try to restore at another installation of lygos, where the snapshot of these files do not exist, restoration will fail.
  • Backed up metadata will be encrypted with your database key, which is only stored on the lygos server instance. Lygos Cloud, Website DO NOT STORE key to your backup, thus cannot access to data inside backup.
  • ⚠️ This database key maybe required to restore a backup in case there is corruption or you are trying to restore from another device other than the one that made the backup.
  • This key is only visible from the server machine. Save it securely!

Restore from Cloud

  • Restores database and file state to the time of the last backup.
  • ⚠️ Restarts server after restoring.
  • ⚠️ Requires old database key if keys don’t match (This can be caused by corruption, migration and on some other cases, therefore always save database key since this is your decryption key to your data).
  • ⚠️ Deletes unnecessary files in the process, so after restoring you can not return back to the previous state (full rollback).

Migration using Backup/Restore

  • You can restore on another lygos installation if:
    • You have your database key from the device that uploaded latest back up to the cloud.
    • Snapshot of files of your backup exists on the installation that created the backup
  • Process:
    • Copy snapshot of your files to a safe location
    • This snapshot of your lygos filestorage directory can be found at:
      • Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\lygos\_filestorage
      • Linux: ~/.config/lygos/_filestorage or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/lygos/_filestorage
      • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/lygos/_filestorage
    • Start Lygos on the new installation, Open a Management Client, Sign in to your account, Bind Engine
    • Now, while leaving a copy of the snapshot at a safe location (for fail-safe), copy the directory to its corresponding location on the new installation.
    • Hit Restore.
    • It will ask you for your database key, enter it
    • It will relaunch, and if everything goes well you have restored on the new installation
    • Important: On the new installation, your database uses a new key afterwards, please mind that.
